Becoming a WorkSafe Investigator
WorkSafe’s Health and Safety Investigators play a vital role in health and safety matters in Victorian workplaces. They conduct comprehensive investigations into serious incidents and alleged breaches of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation which may lead to criminal prosecutions.
The Investigators work with a specialist team of investigators and prosecutors, in a dynamic environment, and spend a large part of their time attending serious incidents, responding to workplace emergencies, interviewing witnesses and preparing briefs of evidence for prosecutions in court.
Investigators are based at WorkSafe offices in Melbourne and across regional Victoria and work with all types of Victorian Workplaces.
To become an Investigator, you need to demonstrate that you have the following experience, skills and qualifications:
Experience
Typically, Investigators have practical experience in conducting complex investigations and a good understanding of the criminal justice system, which may have been gained in the performance of a variety of roles including:
- Investigator in a corporate regulatory setting
- Bullying/Harassment Investigator
- Police Officer
Skills
Potential Investigators should possess the following skills:
- Experience in conducting complex investigations
- Thorough knowledge and ability to practically apply law
- Critical analysis skills
- High forensic standards
- Ability to exercise judgement under pressure
- Resilience and professionalism in adverse situations
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to manage own time effectively and work independently
- Adaptability to change
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Hold a current Victorian driver’s licence
- Computer skills
A working understanding of investigations in light of the criminal justice system and a sound knowledge of OHS legislation will be considered favourably.
Qualifications:

- Legal qualification
- Police Investigations Course

WorkSafe Victoria usually advertises for new Investigators once a year in major metropolitan and regional newspapers and online. Successful candidates undergo a comprehensive induction and training program.
