Independent Impairment Assessors

Independent Impairment AssessorsIndependent Impairment Assessors (IIA) are doctors who are specially trained to conduct impairment assessments that comply with the requirements of the “AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Fourth Edition” and other methods prescribed by the Accident Compensation Act 1985. Impairment assessments are required of workers who have made an Impairment Benefit claim as a result of sustaining a permanent impairment from a workplace injury. Impairment assessments are used to assist WorkSafe assess a worker’s level of entitlement to an impairment benefit.

Impairment assessors, who represent over 25 medical specialities, deliver up to 8000 examinations each year, playing a critical role in ensuring that WorkSafe provides timely and equitable lump sum benefits to injured workers.

Training in the assessment of impairment is provided by a training provider approved by the Minister for WorkSafe. This training course offers both administrative information regarding the assessment of impairment as required by all accident compensation jurisdictions within Victoria (Accident Compensation Act 1985, Transport Accident Act 1986 and Wrongs Act 1958), as well as the theory and practice of assessing impairment in accordance with all prescribed guides.

Upon the successful completion of the impairment assessment training course, impairment assessors can advise impairment_assessment@worksafe.vic.gov.au of their availability to accept referrals from the WorkSafe Agent.
